Chapter 18's December meeting was hosted by Temple University Public Radio/WRTI at their new facilities at 1509 Cecil B Moore Avenue on the campus of Temple University.

Tobias Q. Poole, Operating Director, Temple University Public Radio, welcomed all members and guests to the meeting.

Larry Will, as usual, gave his news of recent developments at the FCC. He stated that the process of final DTV allocations has slipped a bit and that channel selection may be delayed until January or even February. Also, stations at a recent FCC FM auction fetched from $70,000 to $6.5 million.

Bill Gellhaus, chapter secretary/treasurer, discussed the upcoming SMPTE and AES meetings.

January will feature the annual "State of The FCC" meeting with John Rahtes, Philadelphia Field Office EIC speaking along with a presentation on UPS Battery Maintenance. The meeting will be held at the Radio One facility in Conshohocken, PA.

The February meeting will showcase the new studio/technical/entertainment facilities of WXPN at the University of Pennsylvania including their new "World Cafe Live" space. Jay Goldman and Jared Styles will be the hosts for that event.

Thanks for the underwriting of the meeting goes to Phil Owen (of Wheatstone), Tim Peck (of SCMS) and Vince Fiola (of Studio Technology). Food was provided via their underwriting by ABBRACCIO RESTAURANT, 820 South 47th Street, Philadelphia PA 19143. (

The presentation was provided by Tobias Q. Poole (operating director), Joe Patti (production manager) and Jeff DePolo (contract engineer)--all from Temple University Public Radio--WRTI. The new facility, which features 10,000 square feet of space, includes a massive technical plant. Tobias, Joe and Jeff took people around the plant throughout the evening. The new technical plant, designed by Burt Hill Kosar Rittelman Associates, is featured on page 36 of the November 2004 Edition of BE Radio magazine. Further details can be seen in that article.

Jim Perry, certification chair of Chapter 18, gave a talk on SBE Certification--its merits and facets. This was in response to the Society's request that the local chapters have "Certification Nights".
